A man was fighting for his life last night after being engulfed in flames when suspected triad members petrol-bombed a Mongkok VCD store.

 Shop assistant Hung Hing-tong, 21, who suffered 90 per cent burns, was in critical condition in Kwong Wah Hospital.

 He was burnt when one of two Molotov cocktails thrown at the store in Allied Plaza, Nathan Road, exploded in the photo-processing shop opposite, where he had been waiting to collect pictures.

 'He was hit by the bomb. He was on fire and his trousers were burnt,' said Mr Hung's colleague.

 Police were last night hunting two men, one of whom fled with his right trouser leg on fire.

 The pair, aged about 20, are about 1.7 metres tall, of medium build and were dressed in dark clothes.

 They fled to the Nullah Road entrance to Prince Edward MTR station.

 Three passersby also suffered burns in the attack shortly before 1pm.

 Two caught fire as Mr Hung fell on them. Yeung Yuk-lan, 48, was burned on the face and arms. She was in serious condition last night at the same hospital.

 Yeung Chin-keung, 34, whose hands were burned, was in satisfactory condition at Prince of Wales Hospital.

 Two police officers on lunch break doused the blaze before firefighters arrived, while a man who had earlier tried to put out the fire was treated for minor injuries.

 Superintendent Lo Wai-chung of Kowloon West Regional Crime Unit said the container thrown inside the shop was smashed but did not explode.

 However, its contents were ignited by the explosion of the second bomb.

 'At the moment, we still don't know the motive and will investigate various angles,' said Mr Lo.

  He did not rule out triad involvement but said there had been no threats to the shop or its staff.

 Shopkeepers said there had been scuffles over the sale of pirated VCDs in the mall.
