Gas supplies to more than 2,000 homes may be cut off from Sunday if the water heaters' safety has not been checked. Towngas managing director Alfred Chan said yesterday it was implementing the third stage of its inspections. 'We will cut off the gas supply to households if we cannot check their water heaters by the end of Sunday. About 2,000 to 3,000 household heaters have not been checked.' Towngas checked 7,300 household heaters in stage one of the inspection two weeks ago, telling some tenants either to change to new water heaters or to open windows while continuing to use the gas services. Another 4,000 households were checked during the second stage. Households not checked were advised to contact Towngas. Mr Chan said 85 per cent of those households had done so. The inspections followed the death on January 17 of two people who were using old-style water heaters in a flat in Shekkipmei Estate with inadequate ventilation.
