Having a name that causes editors to think twice before printing it in mainstream media is, perhaps, not the best way to attain widespread popularity. But, the Lazy Muthafuckas (LMF) don't really mind bucking the system, being anti-establishment is almost part of their collective credo.

A fellowship based on similar musical interests, LMF are using a love of hip-hop to critique Hong Kong culture and society. The group so far encompasses about 20 individuals; DJs, musicians and graphic artists, but, according to member Kevin Li, anyone can join. 'You too can be a Lazy Muthafucka,' he said.

Lazy they may be, most had just rolled out of bed for a late afternoon interview, but effortless they are not. These young Chinese men are adamant on developing an outlet for creative expression, whilst sending out a strong message about the local recording industry.

'Nobody cares about culture in Hong Kong, music is still entertainment,' said Yan K Y Chan, member of Cantonese rap outfit NT, one of the groups within the collective.

Li, a drummer within the fellowship, concurs, adding 'money comes first, they don't care about art and the culture of the music. If you want to be a star, you don't have to know anything about music, you just need to have the looks'.

Also included in LMF, whose first concert is this weekend, are Anodize and Screw, both 'hardcore' heavy metal bands. Although hip-hop and heavy metal don't usually intersect, the groups are hoping to use LMF as a means of incorporating aspects of hip-hop into the heavy metal they are known for. For the members of LMF, the lure of hip-hop lies in its ability to break social barriers. The art form born out of New York urban culture is now a multi-million dollar global industry.

'It's breaking an old system that said that white people should stay with white people and black with black people. It's about cultural exchange, about finding a way out for Chinese culture,' said Chan.
