I refer to the letter from Simon Lo Chun-kit headlined, 'Library's stupid curtain rule', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on January 23.
The vertical blinds in the libraries are installed primarily for the protection of books against direct sunlight, energy saving and to provide a comfortably illuminated reading environment.
The illuminance (lux) level in the Adult Lending Section of the Shek Tong Tsui Public Library is 500, as measured by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, and is up to the standard recommended for reading.
If the blinds are wide open, the sunlight would probably dazzle the readers and have an adverse effect on the library materials. Therefore, we would normally arrange to keep the window blinds open at a suitable angle to allow some natural light in.
If Mr Lo has any problems or difficulties in using our library services, he is welcome to contact the Assistant Librarian on duty for immediate assistance.
