Sex is a serious topic. In many countries, sex education is included in the school curriculum.

  In Hong Kong, the importance of sex education has been highlighted for several years but not much has been done.

  When children ask their parents where they come from, the adults usually hesitate and do not know how to answer.

  Sex education is also not properly taught in schools.

  Sex education is neglected in Hong Kong because sex is a taboo. Hong Kong people are more conservative than Westerners. They are reluctant to talk about sex.

  Most parents try to avoid the subject and are embarrassed to answer their children's questions on sex.

  Besides, the Government is not actively promoting sex education.

  Neglecting sex education is dangerous as it can lead to serious social problems.

  The first danger is misconceptions about sex. Children are curious by nature. The more you hide, the more they will want to find out.

  Since they cannot obtain information from their parents and teachers, they may turn to un healthy sources such as pornographic books and films for answers.

  Another course of action, which is even more direct and more dangerous, is to have sex with someone.

  The lack of sex education can also lead to sexual harassment and rape.

  Youngsters do not know how to protect themselves. They may get hurt physically and psychologically.

  It can also lead to pregnancy, resulting in a rise in the number of unmarried mothers and unwanted babies.

  Unmarried mothers are usually young and do not know how to look after their babies.

  Unwanted babies are left on the street. Some may end up in charity organisations and foster homes while others are less fortunate.

  Young people may also contract AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases if they do not know how to protect themselves.

 The Education Department should be responsible for introducing sex education.

  The most important thing is to include sex education in the school curriculum so youngsters are given correct information and can develop the right attitude towards sex. ETV programmes can also be used to teach the subject.

  The Family Planning Association should show parents how to teach sex to their children.
