Former All Black Eric Rush received the maximum community sentence of 200 hours yesterday for his role in the death of a 23-year-old man in a road crash last year.
Rush, who will lead New Zealand at next month's Credit Suisse First Boston Hong Kong Sevens, appeared for sentence in an Auckland District Court.
He faced one charge of careless driving causing death, two charges of careless driving causing injury and one charge of dangerous driving, after the car he was driving failed to take a corner on August 10 last year and smashed into another car.
The driver of the other car, Brendon Malcolm, died instantly, while his wife Claire and another passenger, Bryce Casey, were seriously injured.
Rush, who was in Hong Kong last month to officiate at the draw for Hong Kong Sevens, was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay compensation to the victims' families.
Outside the court, Rush said he wanted to apologise to the families for the grief and the pain he had caused them.
