Business students at one university have been swapping their calculators and economics books for basketballs and microphones.

The BusiFest '99 festival, organised by the Business Association of the University of Hong Kong, aims to inject some fun and colour into university life.

The festival includes a basketball tournament, a buffet dinner and a singing contest.

It was the first time such an event had been held by the association. 'For almost three years we have been holding academic workshops and seminars. However, we lacked social activities,' said organiser Joyce Lui Ka- ming, 20, a first year business administration student.

'We feel that this is the right time for organising such activities for a balanced university life, which should strike a balance between academic work and social life.' Ms Lui and fellow business students Raymond Lo Wing- man, Yvonne Chow Yee-wan and Charles Chan Chi-wai organised the festival.

Established in April 1996, the association now has about 1,000 members.

The basketball tournament included a three-point shooting competition, a friendly match between teaching staff and the champions, a free-style shooting competition and friendly matches with other faculties and universities. The final will be held on Saturday.
