Open University to freeze fees while setting up learning centre

The Open University will freeze fees for the next academic year.
This means students who sign up for courses which began in October will still pay an average of $950 per credit, or $114,000 for an ordinary degree programme.
It is estimated the university will lose about $12 million in income.

In June last year, the university lowered a proposed increase in fees from six per cent to around three per cent.
Vice-president Danny Wong Shek-nam said the institution would try ways of reducing operational costs to maintain its self-financing status.

'One of the measures is to set up a regional learning centre and to expand our existing campus so we will be less reliant on renting external venues,' said Professor Wong.
