PIEPING (February 20): OFFICIAL figures show that 750,000,000 gold yuan were exchanged for Jen Min Pao Communist People's Bank currency in the first 15 days of conversion here.

The regular rate is 10 yuan to one Jen Min Pao, but students, teachers, labourers and other poor persons are allowed to exchange up to 500 yuan at a special low rate of three to one. They turned in altogether 475,000,000 yuan.
Authorities estimate 1,500,000,000 yuan were in circulation in the Peiping area, so half the amount remains to be changed before the deadline for conversion - which has been set at February 23.
