Sunshine and high temperatures made this year's Lunar New Year holiday one of the hottest - but a fung shui expert warned the rising mercury could bode ill for the Year of the Rabbit.

Forecasters at the Observatory said the temperature hit 22.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday - the eighth highest since records began in 1885.

The SAR basked in almost three times more sunshine than normal for Lunar New Year's Day.

Tuesday brought 9.3 hours of sunshine compared with the average for this time of year of 3.5 hours, an Observatory spokesman said.

A duty forecaster said the highest new year sunshine rating was 10.8 hours in 1952. The highest temperature on a New Year's Day was 24.6 degrees in 1982.

But fung shui expert Pak Ping-kwong cautioned the mild weather may not be all good news.
