A Hong Kong man accused of taking part in a betting plot centred on English football games was refused bail yesterday.
Liu Wai-yuen, 37, is alleged to have plotted to extinguish floodlights at grounds during matches so a syndicate could fix results.
He appeared in a London court with Malaysians Ong Chee Kew, 49, and Lim Eng Hwa, 35, charged with conspiracy and criminal damage by possessing articles likely to endanger life.
The three were allegedly arrested outside the ground of Charlton Athletic in south London on February 10 with equipment designed to sabotage the floodlights.
One of the club's security staff was said to have been offered GBP20,000 (HK$253,000) to allow access to the ground.
