The former wife of a wealthy hospital chief, who claimed she could end up living on the streets after a multimillion-dollar divorce battle, is being sued by her lawyers for more than $800,000.

  Evelyn Cheung Man-york, 50, received a payout of $22.6 million from her former husband, Dr Walton Li Wai-tat, whose family was instrumental in establishing the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

  However, Ms Cheung had claimed $40 million. She said after the case, in December, that she feared bankruptcy because her award was being swallowed up by legal fees and other costs.

  Her law firm for the case, Hampton, Winter and Glynn, filed a High Court writ yesterday demanding she pay it $884,185 in outstanding fees.

  Despite repeated demands for the sum, Ms Cheung is either unwilling or unable to pay it, says the writ.

  Her legal fees included $500,000 to one of her barristers, John Scott SC, which has been paid, and $100,000 to another, Michael Poll, which has not, it says.

  Other outstanding fees include $42,484 for Mr Scott's air travel, $50,000 for negotiating with her former husband, $150,000 for the handling of her appeal and two installments each of $238,097 relating to earlier work on the case.

  Five other installments totalling $500,000 have been paid by Ms Cheung, the writ says. The law firm is also seeking interest and costs.

  The couple were married for 23 years but their relationship came to an end after Ms Cheung found condoms in a drawer at her husband's office in 1994.

  In February and March, 1995, she made several substantial withdrawals from Dr Li's bank accounts and refused to tell him what she had done with the proceeds, the Court of Appeal said when ruling on the case.

  Ms Cheung failed in her bid to keep the family home, valued at $29 million in 1997. But the court ordered she should receive $16 million from the sale of the house to buy a new flat.
