Why are some animals called scavengers? No food is wasted in the wild. While some animals do their own hunting, others are happy to let others do the hard work and make do with the leftovers.

These animals are called scavengers because they scavenge.

Scavenging is searching for useful things left by others, in this case food.

Animals that die, and the remains of a kill (carrion), are quickly devoured by scavengers such as vultures, jackals, marabou storks and carrion beetles.

How did the expression 'so long' come to mean 'goodbye'? There are several different theories on the origin of 'so long'. One theory says it came from the Irish 'slan', which means farewell. Some anthropologists - people who study human culture - say it's plausible that 'slan' may have been reshaped to 'so long' by speakers of Irish and English.

Another theory studies the use of the phrase in Walt Whitman's poem So long! published in the 1860 edition of Leaves of Grass. Asked to define 'so long', Whitman said it was 'a salutation of departure, greatly used among sailors, sportsmen and prostitutes'.
