Languages can help bridge cultural gap

A knowledge of different languages and strong writing skills helped a King's College pupil win the South China Morning Post Student Linguist of the Year Award.

Frank Chan Ying-guang, 19, can speak and write Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua), English, French and some German.

The seventh-former began learning Putonghua and French at an early age, and took part in many competitions to hone his language skills.

The science student won third prize in Dr Lee Shiu Prizes for Best Essays.

Prize-winner He was the champion in the student section (translation) and second runner-up in the consecutive interpretation section of the Translation and Interpretation Competition at the 23rd Hong Kong Youth Cultural and Arts Competitions last year.

Among the languages he has learned, Ying-guang found German most difficult because of the lack of opportunities to use it and because of its complicated grammar rules.
