THE car insurance industry is to face a grilling following allegations companies have discriminated against disabled drivers.
On May 10, the Legislative Council panel for Finance, Taxation and Monetary Affairs will hear cases put forward by the Disabled Driver's Club and the General Insurance Council of Hongkong claiming unfair discrimination.
According to the chairperson of the Disabled Drivers' Club, Ms Karen Mak Kam-king, many companies refuse to insure disabled drivers, while others demand a 100 per cent levy.
Convenor of the Legco panel, Mr Vincent Cheng Hoi-chuen, said the group wanted to know if there was discrimination against disabled drivers, ''and if so, why''.
The Disabled Drivers' Club wrote to some 80 motor insurance firms but only four of them offered to insure club members.
''Just because we are physically disabled, it should not be an excuse for companies not to accept our insurance,'' said Ms Mak.
The 87 members of the Accident Insurance Association are being asked to supply information on their policy towards disabled drivers by the General Insurance Council, which will represent them at the Legco panel meeting.
