A policewoman died of lung disease yesterday morning, just hours after her family appealed for help in finding an organ donor.

Cheung Wa-hing, 39, a detective for the divisional support team at Tsuen Wan, died of multi-organ failure at about 5am.

On Monday night, her daughter Rita Cheng, 17, and sister Wa-kwan made a desperate appeal for help at Grantham Hospital.

Her husband said yesterday it was a pity they had not managed to get an appeal publicised earlier.

'We missed it by a short time. We're all very upset but we do thank everyone for caring,' Mr Cheng said.

Cheung was at the top of a transplant waiting list of 20 patients.

The mother of two teenagers, who had been a policewoman for 20 years, was diagnosed in February last year as suffering from pulmonary hypertension, which affects blood circulation from the heart to the lungs.
