PERHAPS it would be possible in Singapore, but I doubt if the Hongkong police force have the manpower or the inclination to enforce the no-smoking policy in each and every lift in Hongkong (letter headlined, ''Get tough'', South China Morning Post, April 26), regardless of how much the fine.

Might I suggest that Mr Deepak Thanwani could have taken the radical approach of actually talking to the culprits and asking them to extinguish their cigarettes. Crazy, I know, but believe it or not it sometimes works.
