Mainland central bank governor Dai Xianglong promised yesterday big concessions in the financial sector as part of the country's attempt to enter the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The pledge was echoed by Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao, who said Beijing hoped to wrap up WTO negotiations before its next round of multilateral talks beginning at the end of this year.

'On WTO, we will make big concessions,' said Mr Dai, the People's Bank of China governor.

He did not give any details.

'We hope that the countries concerned will pay attention to the fact that we are a developing country,' he said.

Meanwhile, Chinese negotiators would meet several trading partners in Geneva next week for an exchange of views on Beijing's bid to join the WTO, a Swiss official said last night.
