Hon Siu-wing was certified dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at 11.40am from head traumas despite intensive brain surgery the night before.

The boy forced open the lift doors after his hand was caught and fell into the shaft hours after the lift had undergone a routine maintenance check.

He was with his father, Hon Yau-kok, 40, returning to their eighth floor flat but got out on the fifth floor as they were going up.

His father found him unconscious at the bottom of the shaft.

A maid and a male relative returned to the flat yesterday afternoon to collect clothing before leaving.

The boy's parents were believed to be staying away because of publicity over the accident.
