Immigrant Chan So-shan, 52, was killed and her daughter, Wu Wing-sau, 26, critically injured during the shooting in a car park outside a court in Baltimore, Maryland.

Her former husband, Liu Tsu-shing, 49, whom witnesses alleged turned on the two women with a shotgun and a pistol, was in jail yesterday facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Chan and her daughter had moved to the United States from Hong Kong in 1989, and she married Liu shortly afterwards, friends said.

During the divorce hearing, the pair argued over the US$350 (HK$2,700) alimony money she was claiming, but there was no indication of the violence that was to come when leaving the court.

Witness Thomas Shepeta said he saw the gunman sitting in his car shooting at the women through the window.
