OFFICE secretaries may need to wear safety equipment if a plan to extend the industrial safety ordinance to all workers is accepted.
The Labour Department's chief factory inspector, Mr Chan Tat-king, said yesterday he hoped that safety regulations would be expanded to include all white collar and blue collar workers.
Under the present Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the department only inspects the safety standards of the manufacturing, construction and catering industries.
If the ordinance was extended, factory inspectors could patrol all work places to see if employers and employees were complying with the regulations.
Under the safety regulations, workers can be required to wear safety belts, helmets and other protective clothing in certain circumstances.
Office workers may have to wear safety equipment when using mechanical tools, such as a paper shredder, or face a warning or prosecution, if the ordinance is extended.
