A teacher training school is fighting to pay its lecturers at the same rate as their counterparts in universities.
The Hong Kong Institute of Education hopes it can attract top quality staff to meet increasing demands of teacher training by offering higher salaries.
But it fears the Government may not be willing to spend money in the economic downturn.
The institute in Tai Po last week held its first consultation forum with staff to discuss the pay scheme.
Associate director Norman Ngai Wai-yiu said a proposal should be made within six months to be submitted to the institute's council for endorsement.
Subject to government and Legislative Council approval, the staff could expect to be put on the same pay scale as lecturers in universities by next March at the earliest, he said.
