The newly-established Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) has unveiled its new dynamic logo to mark the new role of tertiary education and vocational training in the SAR.

  The new logo was created by visual communications student Yen Chin-suo, the winner of the logo design contest.

  Mr Yen, who studies at IVE (Lee Wai Lee), said he used only simple dots, lines and surfaces to project the concept of youth and dynamism.

  The nine drops of dark blue, light blue and grey water in his design symbolise the nine former technical colleges and technical institutes.

   He said the design represented the energetic and forward- looking vision of the institute.

  IVE was formed in October by a merger of the Vocational Training Council's Tsing Yi and Chai Wan technical colleges and the seven technical institutes.

   ' I want to show the close relationship between the nine campuses of IVE and the spirit of striving for excellence,' Mr Yen said.

  'We are young, dynamic and adaptive to the challenges ahead. I put all these ideas together with the flexibility of water drops to show that we are well-trained to meet the vocational needs of industry.'   The second year student is taking a part-time certificate course at IVE while studying information systems at Hong Kong Baptist University. He hopes to develop a career in Web design and multimedia computing.

  The logo design took about a month to complete. 'My original colour scheme for the circles was grey, green and black. But the new scheme symbolises a younger and more energetic concept,' he added.

  His design was selected from among 180 entries and was judged by design professionals Dr Ho Tao, Kan Tai-keung and Henry Steiner.

  The judges said his design was strong in symbolism, with the nine dots in three different colours representing a clear structure.

  Meanwhile, VTC chairman Yeung Kai-yin said the IVE would pursue a new role in vocational training.

  'We will shift from craft training towards more technician training for the services and in- employment, rather than pre- employment training,' Mr Yeung said.

  He said the VTC was currently reviewing the apprenticeship system and strengthening professional training in the information technology and financial services sectors.
