As one travels from the Aberdeen Tunnel going towards either Central or the Cross-Harbour Tunnel along Canal Road Flyover past Hennessy Road and if you look to the left, you will see many illegal canopies in the lanes between blocks of buildings, covered with rubbish.
When traffic is held up drivers can have a better look and can see rats making a meal out of this rubbish. This state of affairs was pointed out to me by an overseas visitor who was comparing us with Singapore.
It is disgraceful that the authorities make an effort to clean our major roads but conveniently ignore these small lanes. It is like sweeping rubbish under the carpet and hoping that no one will notice it.
It is not just in this area that these lanes are neglected. With the possible exception of the Peak, this problem can be found in backstreets all over Hong Kong.
I hope the Government will take note and clean up these areas. After all, the Chief Executive has talked about providing a cleaner environment in Hong Kong.
