Cracks have emerged in the Liberal Party in the wake of its about-turn on last week's vote of no confidence in the Secretary for Justice.

A public row erupted yesterday between chairman James Tien Pei-chun and founding member Ada Wong Ying-kay, who wrote an open letter to a newspaper.

The letter said the party's future was in doubt if it lacked the courage, commitment and a clear position to balance community and sectoral interests.

If the party failed to do so, she wrote: 'I might not stay anymore, just quit sadly and quietly.' Mr Tien said last night that Ms Wong was wrong to have aired her views publicly before discussing them with him.

But he admitted there were different views on controversial issues.

'If she wants to air her views, why doesn't she talk to me? I am the chairman and she is a member.

'She should have issued an open letter only if I ignored her.' Mr Tien admitted that Ms Wong's letter would damage the Liberal Party's image and its participation in the District Council election in November.
