Mainland fung shui master Li Yuhui has expressed regret for his part in the Telford Gardens murder and robbery case, his lawyer said yesterday.
But Zhou Wei, vice-dean of Shantou University's Law Faculty, said the defendant insisted he had not killed the five victims and was just an aide to a Zen follower he claimed was the mastermind.
Shantou City Intermediate People's Court is due to deliver its verdict this morning on Li, 46, accused of killing three women and two girls at the Kowloon Bay estate and robbing them of $1.2 million on July 21 last year.
Mr Zhou said he and the other representing lawyer, Chen Ruilin, had met Li twice before the first hearing on March 4.
'He has expressed a bit of regret for taking part in the case - for taking the money. He also expressed fear about being sentenced to death as he knows there is such a possibility,' said Mr Zhou.
He admitted Li would likely face the death penalty on the murder and robbery charges because he could not prove the Zen follower existed. Li argued at the hearing that he had been asked by the follower to perform a ritual ceremony to lengthen the lives of three of the victims.
'He is a very clever person. But he cannot even say what the Zen follower looks like,' said Mr Zhou, adding that Li had asked the court to renew its investigation, but it seemed the judge had rejected the demand.
