Having lived in Hong Kong for over 17 years I finally left in 1996. This year I was able to return on a holiday for the first time as a tourist.
After my recent visit, I left Hong Kong with a disappointed view of travel on the MTR. Over the years as a resident I took many visitors on the magnificent system by using a tourist ticket purchased for $30.
It could be used until the money ran out. On my visit I of course purchased another for myself, cost now $35 - fine.
Imagine my horror when I travelled from Tsim Sha Tsui to Jordan and Jordan to Central, then tried to use this ticket again and was refused at the turnstile! What a rip-off. Now this ticket can only be used to go on two trips. I think this is very expensive under the circumstances. It was all explained in minute lettering.
Come on MTR Corporation, if you are short of funds, this is not the way to make money - at the expense of tourists.
