Women's groups attack ad

Chloe Lai

Women's groups yesterday described as 'offensive and disgusting' a mobile phone advert featuring a picture of a women's legs with a provocative caption.

The newspaper advert, placed by City Telecom, carried the words 'come on up' next to the photo.

Four women's groups called for a boycott of the company. At least 10 complaints against the advertisement were filed with the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority.

A spokeswoman for the groups, Lam Ying-hing, urged the company to apologise and withdraw the advertisement.

The four groups are the Association for the Advancement of Feminism, the Hong Kong Women Workers' Association, the Hong Kong Women's Christian Council and Gutsy Women.

CTI chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay expressed regret about what he said was a 'misunderstanding'.

'Discrimination against either sex is very stupid. We never had the intention to do anything offensive,' he said.

Mr Wong said the second part of the two-part advertisement would 'clear up the misunderstanding' on Sunday.
