New roads must be built to ease congestion in Central, Wan Chai and Western, the Transport Secretary said yesterday.

Nicholas Ng Wing-fui was addressing the transport panel, which heard that officials had blamed buses for traffic congestion in Central.

Assistant Commissioner for Transport Ching Kam-cheong said the number of bus stops in Central was the main cause of snarl-ups.

Mr Ng said officials were considering establishing an interchange bus station so buses did not need to travel long distances before returning to depots.

'It would, however, be a little difficult to build an interchange bus station in the old areas, such as Central. Admiralty seems to be the only possible site,' he said.

'But we would build interchange stations in new towns.' Panel chairman Miriam Lau Kin-yee urged the Transport Bureau to work with the Planning, Environment and Lands Bureau to seek progress on the Central and Wan Chai reclamation project.
