A dream to become a policeman drove a TV engineer to steal a police uniform to satisfy his desire for power, a court heard yesterday.

Cheung Wai-choi, 42, also forged a police warrant card and used a radio to monitor police communications.

Deputy judge Peter Law Tak-chuen jailed Cheung for 10 months after taking into account the fact he did not intend to use the items for other criminal purposes.

Reports described the defendant as 'impulsive' and 'emotional' with a high need for recognition and attention, District Court heard.

Defending, Dickson Pang Kam-fai told the court Cheung had twice tried to join the force in the 1970s but had been rejected.

His long-standing frustration intensified after he was attacked with acid in a dispute while working as a security commander at a construction site and was disfigured, Mr Pang said. No one was prosecuted for the attack.
