Why is the SAR Government discriminating against mature students? I am a mature student studying in one of Hong Kong's leading universities. Because I have worked before and own a small flat I have been told I am not eligible for a loan or a grant from the Government.
It seems to only want to invest in college-age young students.
To make matters worse, because I am over the age of 25, I am not entitled to MTR travel discounts.
The normal price of an MTR ticket is reduced by 50 per cent for younger students. The expense of travelling is astronomical, by students' standards, because I have to take the longest train ride to my Hong Kong Island-side university from my Kowloon home.
Apparently, the Government is basing the granting of its allowances solely on age, not on need.
I am not earning at the moment and have to fall back on my limited savings. Students of all ages face the same expenses.
Expense is expense, and it hits hard those, college-age or not, who are without sources of income.
