8 possible candidates for top Macau job listed

Eight possible candidates for the post of Macau's first chief executive were listed by a respected independent newspaper yesterday.

Va Kio Pou (Overseas Chinese Newspaper) said that in addition to front-runner Edmund Ho Hau-wah, they comprised fellow banker Stanley Au Chong-kit, toy manufacturer Dr Eric Yeung Tsun-man, middle school principal Tong Chi-kin, bus company manager Iu Iu-cheong, car park company manager Ma Iao-lai - son of veteran community leader Ma Man-kei - and two prominent businesswomen, Susana Chou and Tina Ting Yee-ho.

Beijing's semi-official mouthpiece in Macau, the Ou Mun Yat Pou (Macau Daily) said on Monday that there were just three 'main candidates': Mr Ho, Mr Au and Dr Yeung.

Mr Ho, who is the 44-year-old son of the former Macau leader Ho Yin, is widely expected to win the race by a large margin.

Previous reports also mentioned veteran business leaders Ng Fok and Vitor Ng as possible candidates.

A 200-member Selection Committee is scheduled to choose the chief executive before May 25.

The committee will be set up in Beijing on April 9.

None of the possible candidates have declared whether they intend to run for the position.
