A Hong Kong holidaymaker was killed and her male companion seriously injured in Australia yesterday when the hire car they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a tree.
The woman Chinese driver and male front seat passenger - who police said were Australian citizens - also died in the accident on a remote stretch of the Pacific Highway in northern New South Wales.
Identities of the dead and injured, all aged 22, have not been released until relatives have been informed.
Chinese Embassy officials in Canberra were trying to contact their families last night.
Police said the three died instantly. The sole survivor had to be cut from the wreckage.
