HIS may be the paramount (''loudest'' would be too unkind) voice at the dignified China Club, but David Tang does not always get his own way.

Despite his objections, the club will today inaugurate its Long March Bar which David, who is not usually given to hype, calls ''the longest bar in Hongkong''.

Keeping Posted inspected his claims and can report that, taking the reflection from the mirror at the far end into consideration, he is probably right.

''The members had been asking for a bar but I opposed it because I didn't think it was Chinese, and also for the practical reason that we had nowhere suitable to have a bar,'' said David.

''But member Stephen McGuinness of the Plum Blossoms Gallery alerted me to the fact that the elongated TV room on the second floor would make an ideal bar. And having chewed the idea over I agreed.'' With this new addition to the exclusive club (membership: $150,000; waiting list: depends on your bank manager) David hopes to make his members ''upwardly mobile'' - in other words, draw them up the stairs.

As for the name, he offered this explanation: ''We are not the most aerobic of clubs. We go more for mental rather than physical exercise, hence the name, which celebrates an event in China's history which evokes both heroism and patriotism.'' For sure they'll be drinking a toast to that every night at the Long March Bar.
