THE animals from the worlds of Beatrix Potter and Wind in the Willows may have to share pride of place on children's bookshelves with a new set of creatures from Farthing Wood. The intrepid animals, led by artful Fox, seek out a new home after developers bulldoze them out of Farthing Wood. Before they set out they take an oath of loyalty, tested to the full during their ensuing adventures. Fox, Badger, Toad, Mole and their friends are stars of a major children's television series in Europe and there are a range of books to go with it. The Animals of Farthing Wood - The Adventures of Mole by Colin Dann, adapted by Clare Dannatt (Red Fox, $44), is a story concerning the consequences of lovable Mole's greed for worms, with full-page colour illustrations. In Butterfingers, by Dennis Reader (Picture Lions, $35) Benjamin Butters is the clumsiest of little boys, managing to drop everything that comes his way, from goldfish bowl to eggs. But this changes when faced with an extra special bundle - his baby sister.
