Government lawyers are considering seeking a review of a court decision to hand the wife of a senior civil servant convicted of beating her Indonesian maid a fine of $500.
The Department of Justice has applied to the magistrate who made the ruling, James Lee, so that papers relating to the case can be handed over for scrutiny.
It emerged last night that complaints lodged by the maid, Rukiyah, against government chemist Dr Ting Tai-lun have been passed to the Labour Tribunal for adjudication.
His wife, Maria Mui Yuk-ming, 50, was fined and ordered to pay Ms Rukiyah $3,000 compensation on April 7 after Mr Lee found her guilty of assault.
She had been convicted for beating the maid over the head with a broomstick.
A spokesman for the Department of Justice said: 'An application has been made to the magistrate for the case papers with a view to pursuing a review of sentence.
