The financier smiled throughout most of his 10-minute appearance in Eastern Court.

Chim is charged with providing food and drink to about 90 potential voters on March 27, 1998, in an attempt to sway their votes in the financial services subsector elections held on April 2.

The subsector helped elect members to the 800-member Election Committee, which in turn chose 10 legislators.

The 52-year-old tycoon was also accused of incurring election expenses on March 27, 1998, on behalf of candidates in the financial services subsector elections, while not running in the race and without authorisation from any of the 14 candidates.

Chim said 'not guilty' loudly as each of the charges was read out to him in court.
