The Teletubbies will lead an initiative by the British television and music industry to try to strengthen cultural links with China.
British Culture Secretary Chris Smith arrived in Beijing yesterday for a nine-day visit during which he will discuss methods of combating piracy and protecting copyright.
A spokesman for the British Government said Mr Smith was concerned by the high levels of software and film piracy in China.
He would urge Beijing to amend laws to target piracy in other areas besides music cassettes and compact discs, including optical discs and software.
But he is also leading a delegation of leading British media executives who will try to persuade China to accept more television productions.
'One of the best ways of overcoming piracy is to encourage more foreign participation,' the spokesman said.
