The letter from Phillip Bruce, corporate affairs manager of the Airport Authority (South China Morning Post, April 23), is unacceptable. He is saying that the authority knows there is demand for air-side trolleys, but it is not going to do anything about it in the near future.
In taking a conscious decision not to provide these trolleys the Airport Authority made a mistake. It was a decision against the trend in international airports worldwide.
With its great distances Chek Lap Kok is not at all a user-friendly airport. It is a nightmare for the old or those travelling on their own with small children. The authority's stock answer would be, of course, that such people should ask for assistance, but the fact is they don't; they simply struggle. The authority should admit it made a mistake, bite the bullet and get on with modifications now.
One more point: why is the new airport so lamentably equipped for the disabled? When the MTR can modify its existing system with the likes of tactile guides for the blind, it is incredible that the Airport Authority should design and build a brand new airport in the 1990s with no such provision.
