For Diocesan Girls' School (DGS), it was a case of words speaking louder than actions, as they emerged champions in the annual inter- school debating competition at Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui.
DGS beat King George V School (KGV) in the final to retain the trophy they won last year.
In the semi-finals, DGS eliminated Chinese International School, with the motion being, 'Globally, is there a lack of concern for the environment?', while KGV outwitted St Joseph's College on the theme, 'Are people self-sufficient?' A $10,000 cash voucher was on offer to the winners of the competition, in which a total of 28 schools took part.
In the closely contested final, the DGS team - Enoch Li, Angie Chang, Anna Mae Koo and Lynette Leung - opposed the motion, 'Censorship is the hallmark of an immature society', while KGV spoke in favour of it.
The audience and adjudicators were impressed by the students' oratory skills and good command of language.
The DGS pupils were modest about their success, saying that their 'negative stand' on the motion helped.
