MasterCard International has reported a 25.6 per cent increase in the number of cards issued and a 12.4 per cent increase in transaction volume for Hong Kong last year. The growth figures boosted the number of MasterCard's issued in the SAR to 2.1 million and transaction volume to US$2.9 billion. The company said its card products - credit, debit and chip cards - had generated more than $650 billion in global transaction volume last year, up 11 per cent from 1997. MasterCard credit cards were used for 7.4 billion transactions, up 14 per cent. MasterCard/Cirrus automatic teller machine (ATM) network - which allows worldwide cash assess through the MasterCard payments network - handled 609 million transactions, up 28 per cent from 1997. In Greater China, MasterCard committed to installing 13,400 MasterCard/Cirrus ATM terminals with two major networks in the mainland providing ATM services.
