The Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company said 1,000 fewer trips per day were being taken on its Cheung Chau to Central route on average this year compared to last year.

This could be blamed on rising unemployment or the growth of unlicensed and illegal ferry services operating on the route, it said.
An HYF spokesman said: 'On average there were around 15,000 to 18,000 journeys a day on that route last year but around 1,000 fewer this year.' He did not know what financial losses the company had incurred as a result.
The company said it would run more ferries from Mui Wo to Central during peak hours by Monday.
