Two local tertiary institutions have been rated among the top 10 in Asiaweek magazine's 1999 ranking of universities in Asia. The survey was released last month.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU), rated fourth, was cited for its commitment to globalisation. According to the magazine, the university's vice-chancellor, Cheng Yiu-chung, hopes to build up the school's foreign student numbers to 10 per cent of enrolment.

The university topped the list in terms of faculty resources, while it ranked fourth for financial resources.
