Lam Ngai-chun, 32, was said to have been shot at least twice in the neck and body by a constable who intercepted him.

Lam reportedly entered the store shortly after 4pm wearing a mask.

He threatened three assistants manning the counters with a handgun and then grabbed watches and jewellery, stuffed them into two plastic bags and fled.

An officer who was on patrol near the hotel was alerted by the shop's alarm and intercepted Lam near the car park. The pair struggled and Lam was shot.

Police cordoned off the shopping arcade entrances up to the Science Museum in Salisbury Road, at first believing Lam might have had an accomplice.
