12 fishermen missing

Rescue helicopters and search teams from the mainland were last night looking for 12 fishermen missing since their boat sank south of Hong Kong Island early yesterday.

The boat went down in rough seas at 7am with 26 mainlanders aboard, all from Hainan province.

The accident happened 31 nautical miles south of Hong Kong Island, just outside SAR waters.

Fourteen crew members were rescued by a passing Singaporean-registered cable vessel which took them to Hong Kong.

Three were injured, but only one needed hospital treatment. All had been discharged last night.

An air and sea search, involving four helicopters, continued throughout the day.
