UNFANCIED Regal pulled off one of the upsets of the season when they defeated Hongkong title contenders Suntex 87-85 in the Division A1 play-offs at MacPherson Stadium last night. Regal, who narrowly qualified as one of the top six teams to contest the overall title in a final round-robin, fought back valiantly from a 43-51 half-time deficit. First round winners Seasonal had no problems against sixth-placed Frankwell in a comprehensive 116-95 victory, consolidating their position as favourites. Play-off teams carry over handicap points from the regular season, allowing Seasonal to steal a march on their rivals. But last night belonged to Regal. They survived three anxious minutes at the end of their famous victory over Suntex - who had beaten Seasonal only last month. Regal took time to settle as Suntex began confidently with some good work from star player Bill Courtney and Eric Strothers. Regal's new signing Jose Sinighter, playing his second match for his new team, had an outstanding game, netting 38 points as the night's top scorer. Chris Knight also contributed with 22 points after putting his team ahead for the first time one minute into the second period at 53-51. It was a neck and neck battle with Regal narrowly edging in front but Suntex snatched the lead again at 83-82 thanks to Courtney's fine basket. But Sinighter and Knight put their team back into the reckoning and although Suntex threatened to take the lead with a minute to go after Strothers was successful with two free throws, Regal survived a frantic last minute to hold on for victory. Seasonal's Mark Meredith continued where he left off as he top-scored for his team with 36 points. Chad Tucker chipped in with 27 points while David Willard scored 22 points.
