A man punched a pedestrian and smashed his head against a pavement on a busy street in Causeway Bay after accusing the victim of bumping into him.
The 27-year-old defendant, surnamed Ng, said the victim, who was walking with his girlfriend along Jardine's Bazaar on January 19, had knocked into him.
A heated argument ensued, after which Ng, who claimed he was drunk, punched the victim in the face.
After the victim fell to the ground, Ng continued striking him on the body and smashed his head on the pavement. Ng was later arrested after a passerby alerted the police.
The victim was taken to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment and later had to receive surgery on his left eye.
Ng was released on bail, went to the mainland and did not return to appear in court on the designated date. He was arrested recently while returning from the mainland.
