Jeff Beck - Who Else! (Sony) 'Guitar god' is all Jeff Beck ever need put on his CV. Inspiration to millions of air-guitar players, a legend to the rest, Beck's credits are far too flowery to list here. Something of a prodigal son when it comes to maximising his talent, Beck disappears, regrettably, from mass appreciation for years at a time, and this is his first collection of new stuff for a decade. It contains all the requisite guitar fireworks for a player so adroit his only serious rivals in the ability stakes were Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. You have to be a guitar geek to appreciate some of the nuances of technique, but if you can't do that, better to wallow in this virtuoso display. Beck has evidently been a fixture at his local record shop in the past few years, absorbing everything from rap, to the strange issue of Prodigy, to traditional Irish melody, re-interpreting the lot and sending it back out with a turbo-charger up its backside. The boy has come a long way since the days of Hi-Ho Silver Lining, his somewhat crass, perennial party hit, and while there's a suspicion here of an old dog learning new tricks, that has to be better than standing still.
