WRITTEN as fiction, no publisher would handle this week's English league football scenarios unless he happened to specialise in boys' comics. The verdict would simply be: nobody would believe it.

But not surprisingly, the subject does take place in England, from the stellar heights of the Premier League to the bare stands of the lower regions of the Third Division.

If there was ever any need to explain the reason why the sport captivates so many, surely last weekend in England provided it.

Carlisle United survived in league football in the fourth minute of stoppage time when on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass scored a winner in a desperate up-field dash for a corner. He's a hero for life in the border town, but won't even be around next season.

Can you imagine anyone believing that scenario in a novel? Elsewhere, Charlton Athletic, doomed in the eyes of most midway through the season, scored an incredible four goals away from home against Aston Villa, with the winner, which extended their Premiership life until today at least, coming in the final minute.

Four goals, indeed. There was a time they would scarcely have scored as many in four months.
