Huge gambling debts linked to Macau attack

1-MIN READ1-MIN

Police believe huge gambling debts are the most likely reason behind the shooting of a 24-year-old alleged casino loanshark during a quarrel with three men at his family home on Sunday.

Sources close to the investigation said the victim was shot in the head by one of the men during an argument over gambling debts at the housing estate flat in Macau's Tamagnini Barbosa district.

The trio fled after the shooting.

The sources said the injured man was suspected of being a member of a gang of loansharks operating at the Pelota Basca casino in the Outer Harbour district, as well as being a compulsive gambler.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the casino said the man, who was in a satisfactory condition at the Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre, was not a member of its staff.

'He is not employed by us,' the spokesman said.
